INSTITUTE, W. Va. ? The West Virginia State College Yellow Jackets upended the Thundering Herd 12-8 in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday at Calvin Bailey Field, prior to game two?s early conclusion due to darkness, resulting in a 2-2 tie.
In game one, WV State College (1-3-1) stormed out of the gates in the first inning to score seven runs on four hits to take a 7-0 lead. Dana Samples led off the inning with a triple to right field. Marshall starter Fritz Conrad (Ocoee, Fla.) walked the next batter before surrendering a two-run double to Tim Shilling. An infield error kept the inning rolling with two outs, followed by a Jerry Adkins two-run double and a Jeffry Cadwallader two-run homer. Conrad (0-1) finished the inning, but would not return in the second.
Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) led off the second inning with a walk and would later score from third base due to a Jon Stream balk to narrow the margin at 7-1.
The Thundering Herd (3-9-1) tallied three runs in the third inning after Corie O?Bryan?s (Frederick, Md.) ground ball to third base resulted in a 5-4-3 double play. With two outs, Francois Larmore (Magnolia, N.J.) singled to put Craig Dziedziejko (Kitchener, Ont.) at the plate, who had been struggling to find his stroke thus far in 2003. Marshall?s lone senior position player delivered a double to the left-center field wall that allowed Larmore to score from first base. The Herd cut its deficit to 7-4 when Russell blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence, his second home run of the year.
WVSC?s Andy Maught hit a solo home run in the fourth inning over the left field fence. With two outs, the Herd allowed the Jackets to plate three more runs in the inning on only one hit, but two critical Marshall errors contributed to the outburst that put MU down 11-4.
Stream, WVSC?s starting pitcher, was relieved by Willie McLane in the fourth inning who earned the victory for the Yellow Jackets. McLane (1-0) pitched three innings and gave up three hits and four earned runs.
Larmore belted a three-run opposite field home run in the fifth inning to close the gap to 11-7. Marshall would make it a three-run contest by adding another run in the sixth inning, but WV State College regained the four-run lead in its half of the sixth when Sam Gerkin led off with a solo home run.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first when Josh Robinson scored on a grounder to shortstop after leading the second inning off with a walk to give WVSC a 1-0 lead.
WVSC starter Tim Shilling did not allow a Marshall hit until the fourth inning, when shortstop Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) singled to third base. Koitsopoulos was 3-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday?s twin bill.
The Herd fell behind 2-0, and were in danger of the game being called due to darkness while trailing WVSC. Marshall, though, received a pinch-hit sacrifice fly off the bat of Gregg Hiller (Greenville, Ohio) that scored Russell. With O?Bryan on third base, new pitcher Dana Samples unloaded a wild pitch that scored the Herd third baseman to tie the game at 2-2.
Thundering Herd starting pitcher Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, Ill.) pitched 4.2 innings giving up only two hits while striking out two Yellow Jackets.
Marshall was afforded its last at bat in the top of the sixth inning, but only sent four hitters to the plate and did not score.
The umpires called the game as relief pitcher Scott Henning (Wilmington, Del.) prepared to face the Yellow Jacket 3-4-5 hitters in the bottom of the sixth inning.
