Baseball Team Prepares for Home Opener on Saturday

3/21/2003

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? After a 17-game season-opening road swing, Marshall?s baseball team will finally play its home opener at University Heights on Saturday versus intra-state foe Concord College at 2 p.m.

Marshall (5-11-1) is on a current two-game losing streak in which it was outscored 24-1. The Thundering Herd is coming off a 14-1 loss versus Kentucky on Tuesday.

Head coach Dave Piepenbrink will give Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, Ill.) his first career start on the mound versus Concord. Ziroli, a junior transfer from Parkland College, owns a 1-0 record and, in his last outing, pitched two innings versus Kentucky, allowing only one hit and no runs.

Concord (5-8) is coming off of its spring break trip to Savannah, Ga. The Mountain Lions picked up a couple of wins versus two of Division II?s nationally-ranked teams. Concord shutout Kutztown (Pa.) University on Saturday 5-0, after downing Northern Kentucky two days prior by a 5-1 final score.

Marshall?s home stand will continue as the Herd prepares to take on the Colonial Athletic Association?s Drexel University Dragons in a three-game series beginning Sunday at University Heights.
