WILSON, N.C. ? North Carolina State completed the three-game sweep of Marshall University by winning Sunday?s contest by a 9-1 final score at Fleming Stadium.
NC State (12-4) received a solid performance from its starter, Phillip Davidson (1-1), who pitched eight innings, allowing only four hits and one run to earn the victory. The sophomore out of Rhode Island struck out nine Marshall hitters in his longest outing of the season.
The Wolfpack got on the scoreboard first when Jeremy Dutton blasted a solo home run over the right field wall in the third inning. NC State was not finished, however, posting three more runs in the inning on the strength of three doubles.
NC State continued to add to its lead in the fourth inning when Joe Gaetti hit his fourth home run of the series, a solo shot, to right-center field. Tim Coffield later hit an RBI single up the middle to give NCSU a 6-0 lead.
The Thundering Herd (3-8) finally cut into its six-run deficit in the top of the fifth inning, when Matt LaFleur (Chesapeake, Va.) singled up the middle to drive in Francois Larmore (Magnolia, N.J.). Larmore led the inning off with a single past the second baseman, followed by a Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, Md.) base hit to advance the Herd right fielder to second base.
The Herd could not get anything going offensively, stranding six runners.
Marshall starting pitcher Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went five innings in his second career start, giving up six runs. Koutsavlis (1-1) did not give up a walk and struck out four Wolfpack hitters.
Marshall will play its first game in its home state on Wednesday, a doubleheader with West Virginia State beginning at 1 p.m. in Institute, W. Va.
