HUNTINGTON?The Marshall University will travel to Richmond, Ky. Friday for the EKU Open. The Thundering Herd athletes will compete against Eastern Kentucky, Bellarmine College, Berea, Centre College, Cumberland College, the University of Kentucky, Lees-McRae College, Morehead State and Wilberforce University.
The Herd is coming off a solid meet at Miami University and looks to continue their winning ways in Richmond. Junior Shelby Pride broke her own school record in Oxford, Ohio by seven seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Bethel, Ohio native ran the event in 11:20.28, which ranks her fifth in the Mid-American Conference.
Junior Mike Jones also set a new personal record in the men?s 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.63. Jones? time is fourth best in the MAC this season.
The Thundering Herd has16 athletes ranked in the top 10 in the MAC. Senior standout Erin Compton ranks first in the discus with a season best 163-feet-3 inches in the discus throw. Compton is also ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the discus and fourth in the MAC in the hammer throw.
The men?s 1,600-meter relay team is second in the MAC following their winning performance at Miami with a time of 3:12.31. The team of James Hickey, Phil Jones, James Barr and Jermaine Kelly came within a second of qualifying for the NCAA Regionals and one-tenth of a second of breaking the school record.
Marshall will also be sending a select number of throwers to WVU Saturday.
