Compton Ranked 28th In The Nation In Discus

4/21/2003

Marshall's Erin Compton is ranked 28th in the nation in the discus event.

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.?Erin Compton?s storybook season is continuing to gather more momentum. According to the new NCAA Championship Outdoor Track and Field Performance list, Compton ranks 28th in the nation with her record setting distance of 165-feet-6.5 inches (50.46 meters) this past weekend at Eastern Kentucky.

The Oak Hill, W. VA native was ranked 32nd in the nation before this weekend. Compton is also ranked ninth in the East Region and leads the Mid-American Conference by 10-feet-3 inches. She won the discus event Friday at EKU by 29-feet and earned her fourth discus championship this season. Compton is only two wins away from capturing 10 discus titles in her collegiate career and is .17 hundredths of a meter away from cracking the top 25.

?This is a good showing of her work ethic,? throwing coach Tim Amann said. ?Erin has done a great job this season and should continue to improve before the MAC Championships.?

Compton?s season started out with a record shattering performance at the Ohio Early Bird Invitational. She threw for 163-feet-3 inches breaking her own school record in the event and the Goldsberry Track facility record. She holds three school records and won the 2001 MAC Discus Championship. She has only been beat by four other women this season in the discus and averages 159 feet per throw in the discus, which is four-feet better than Buffalo?s Faith Thompson?s season best throw of 155-feet-3 inches. Thompson is ranked 2nd in the MAC in the discus.

Compton has won the discus event at the Ohio Early Bird Invitational, The McDonald?s Invitational, the Miami Invitational and the Eastern Kentucky Invitational. She finished fifth at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC. Compton has won both the discus and hammer throw events twice this season and is ranked fourth in the MAC in the hammer throw.

Compton is Marshall's second nationally ranked athlete since Casey Batey last season.

To qualify for the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Compton would have to place fifth or better in the East Regionals. Compton could qualify for the championships by being the one of the remaining top five in the nation.
