Nine-Run Fifth Seals Eastern Kentucky Victory

4/22/2003

  • Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. ? Marshall surrendered nine runs in the fifth inning to Eastern Kentucky en route to a 13-10 loss at the hands of the Colonels at Turkey Hughes Field on Tuesday.

Eastern Kentucky?s Josh Anderson drove in four runs in the monumental Colonel fifth inning with a two-run double and triple. In all, EKU tallied six hits, coupled with two Herd errors, to take a 12-5 lead after five innings of play.

Anderson finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Marshall (14-25-1, 5-11 MAC) led Eastern Kentucky 5-0 after three innings. Craig Dziedziejko (Kitchener, Ont.) hit the first of his two three-run home runs, this one a drive over the right field wall that scored Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, Md.) and Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) in the first inning. Matt LaFleur (Chesapeake, Va.) followed Dziedziejko?s blast with a solo home run, his seventh of 2003. It was the first time this season that the Thundering Herd hit back-to-back home runs.

The Colonels (17-16, 5-3 OVC) inched closer in the bottom of the fourth inning, posting three runs on three Marshall errors for a 5-3 deficit before the nine-run outburst in the fifth.

Marshall starting pitcher Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched two outs in the fifth inning before giving way to Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, Ill.). Koutsavlis (4-2) finished with 4.2 innings pitched with nine hits and five earned runs.

Six Marshall errors heavily contributed to the Herd?s defeat, as only six of the 13 Colonel runs were earned.

Dziedziejko hit his second three-run home run, his seventh round tripper of 2003, in the seventh inning. Koitsopoulos hit a two-run double earlier in the inning that plated Francois Larmore (Magnolia, N.J.) and Lance Veeser (Wilson, Mich.).

Dziedziejko went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and six RBIs. Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded one RBI in his 2-for-4 day.

Andy Polzin picked up the victory for Eastern Kentucky to improve his record to 1-1. EKU starter Brad Schmittou went 3.1 innings with seven hits and five earned runs allowed. Brandon Scott earned the save, his fourth of the season.

Marshall will continue its Mid-American Conference slate this weekend at Bowling Green with a four-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at Warren E. Steller Field.
