Marshall's Erin Compton looks to continue a stellar senior season Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championships. |
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?This weekend?s NCAA East Regional Championships will be special for the Marshall University track and field team. Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va.) and Terry Stahl (Vienna, Va.) will represent Marshall at the championships Friday and Saturday at George Mason University.
Stahl will go down in history as the final male track athlete to compete in a Marshall uniform. The junior qualified for the meet at the McDonald?s Invitational in the hammer throw after winning the event with a toss of 180 feet-1 inch. He enters the event ranked 31st in the region. In his last meet, Stahl took ninth place in the hammer at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.
Compton has a strong possibility of qualifying for the NCAA Championships at California State University in Sacramento, Calif. Compton will compete in both the hammer and discus events and is ranked 10th in the discus and 17th in the hammer. In her last meet, Compton won the MAC discus championship and placed fourth in the hammer throw.
Compton will face many familiar faces in Fairfax, Va. this weekend, some of which she has defeated at other meets. Compton defeated eighth ranked Allyson Criner (UNC) and ninth ranked Elise Mitchell (UVA) at the Raleigh Relays. At the Penn Relays, her toss of 165-4 was 5-feet-3 inches better than fifth ranked Dore DeBarolo (Florida). Compton?s biggest challengers in the discus will be Deshya Williams (Penn State), Laura Gerraughty (UNC) and Jill Pedretti (UNC), who were the top three in the event last year.
Stahl will compete Friday at 10 a.m. in the men?s hammer throw and Compton will compete Saturday at 10 a.m. in the hammer throw and 3:30 p.m. in the discus. To qualify for the NCAA Championships, Compton and Stahl have to finish in the top 5 in the event or be one of the remaining top five in the nation.
