- Final Results
SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Kent State University won the 2003 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship, edging Miami University by two strokes, Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club.
The team title came down to the final hole as the Flashes tallied a 1174-1176 victory over Miami. With the victory, Kent State has now won ten of the last 12 Mid American Conference Golf Championships.
The two-stroke victory is the narrowest margin of victory (except for a Miami-KSU tie in 1992) since Ohio edged out Marshall by one stroke in 1957.
The Golden Flashes' 1174 is also the highest winning score in the MAC Championships since the league instituted a best four out of five scores format in 2000.
The RedHawks' Mark Weghorst earned tournament medalist honors carding a two-over par 290, beating out teammate Eric Phipps by one stroke. KSU's Peter Laws and Steve Lohmeyer, along with the University of Toledo's Justin Bertsch tied for third another stroke back.
Marshall shot a disappointing 316 on Sunday to finish last out of the ten teams with a score of 1260 and conclude the season.
The Thundering Herd's top individual was Drew Whitten. The Hurricane native shot a final round 75 to finish tied for 25th at 306.
Marshall should benefit with the return of Burke Spensky next season. The senior standout from Huntington and Marshall's top overall player was forced to take a medical redshirt this season.
