Compton Advances To Finals In Opening Round of NCAA Meet

Senior Erin Compton advanced to the final of the discus throw Wednesday at the NCAA Championships. Compton placed 10th in the qualifying round.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Marshall?s Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va.) advanced to Friday?s women?s discus final at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday. Compton finished 10th, which was good enough for her to
advance, in the qualifying round with a toss of 162-feet-6 inches.

The senior discus thrower finished fourth in her flight, which included No. 1 seed Becky Breisch of Nebraska. Compton qualified on her third and final throw of 162-feet-6 inches. Bresich won the preliminary round with a distance of 184-feet-10 inches. Compton went into the qualifying round ranking 24th out of 28 competitors. She upset North Carolina?s Jill Pedretti, who has defeated Compton twice this season. Pedretti was the final of 12 qualifiers for Friday?s final.

Friday?s final starts at 2:30 p.m. PST (5:30 p.m. EST). Full results can be found at www.hornetsports.com. Highlights from all the action will be televised Saturday at 3 p.m. on CBS television.
