Compton Finishes Eighth in Finals Of NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif.?Marshall track and field standout Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va.) finished her career at Marshall by finishing the NCAA Championships as the eighth best discus thrower in the country. Compton?s second throw of 165-feet-8 inches put her in eighth place and becoming the highest finisher at the NCAA Championships in Marshall track and field history.
?It was an awesome experience,? Compton said. ?It is really special to be here and to finish my career on such a high note.?
Penn State?s Deshaya Williams won the discus national championship with a toss of 181-feet-9 inches. Top-seeded Becky Breisch of Nebraska finished third. Florida?s Dore DeBartolo, the top seed at the East Regional Championships, finished 11th. Compton qualified for Friday?s final after finishing 10th in the qualifying round. Her eighth place at the NCAA Championships adds another big accomplishment what has already been a storybook senior season, the Oak Hill native said.
?I never expected that I would be here,? she said. ?It was one of the best competitions I have ever been apart of.?
Compton?s senior season included such highlights as becoming the first Marshall track athlete to win an event at the historic Penn Relays, winning the 2003 Mid-American Conference discus Championships and qualifying for the NCAA Championships at the East Regional Championships.
