Baseball Signs Another Pittsburgh Pitcher
6/19/2003
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University coaching staff has once again dipped into the Pittsburgh talent pool by signing North Allegheny High School product Adam Dobies to play Mid-American Conference baseball in 2004, announced head coach Dave Piepenbrink on Thursday.
Dobies, a 6-1, 220-pound, right-handed pitcher, led his alma mater to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League title in 2003 with a team-best 8-1 record on the mound. He also led North Allegheny (20-5) in innings pitched (59) and strikeouts (60) while accumulating a thin 1.31 ERA.
?Adam brings a bulldog mentality to the mound,? MU pitching coach Tom Carty said. ?He?s got the type of arm and competitiveness that we want on this team.?
The future Marshall hurler was primarily recruited for his pitching prowess, but the first team All-WPIAL selection as a pitcher and first baseman could see time as a designated hitter and/or position player. Dobies hit at a .392 clip last season while leading the team with 31 RBIs and seven home runs.
?His power at the plate may allow us to work him into the lineup,? Carty said.
Dobies was also named to the first team All-North Pittsburgh squad and was an All-Academic Student Athlete at North Allegheny.
Dobies joins Pittsburgh-area natives and fellow pitchers Brian Chrisman (Baldwin H.S.) and Jake Cuffman (Butler H.S.) as new signees to the Thundering Herd program. Current Herd pitcher and Pittsburgh native Chris Koutsavlis (Mt. Lebanon H.S.) is tied for the team lead in wins in 2003, the left-hander?s freshman season.
Cuffman was selected in the 14th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
