Greg Spector Named New Marshall Volleyball Assistant Coach
6/23/2003
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?Marshall University head volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs has announced that Greg Spector has been named the team?s new assistant coach. Spector formerly coached at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio.
?Greg was an excellent Division I player who brings a lot of energy to the gym,? Jacobs said. ?He played internationally and at very high levels, so we?re looking forward to some fresh training ideas on the floor this fall. He will work with our middle hitters and blockers with their offensive and defensive schemes, as well as serve as our recruiting coordinator.?
Spector served as the graduate assistant coach for the Urbana University Blue Knight volleyball team from 2001-2002. He received his Master of Education degree from Urbana University in Spring 2002. The Lady Knights went 21-17 overall in 2002, and for the first time in school history posted back-to-back 21-win seasons and advanced to the American Mideast Conference Division Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Spector was also assistant coach of the junior varsity program at Urbana University. He served as the tournament director of Urbana University?s first ever volleyball tournament, the First Annual Appleseed Classic, an eight-team pool play tournament for junior varsity and community college volleyball teams.
Before coming to Urbana, Spector had coaching stints at Valhalla High School in Rancho San Diego, La Jolla High School in La Jolla, Calif. (men?s), Patrick Henry High School in La Mesa, Calif. (men?s and women?s) and Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis.
Spector turned Patrick Henry High School?s program around in one season. The men?s team posted a 4-19 record in 1997 and in Spector?s first season in 1998, he led the team to a 15-9 record and a second place finish in their league. He also coached the women?s team, which was the undefeated Eastern League Champions in 1998. He led Lawrence Central High?s women?s team to a sectional championship and regional finals appearance in 2000 for the first time in the program?s history.
Spector also coached club teams for Indy ATTAC Volleyball Club in Indianapolis. He was an assistant coach for the International Maccabbi Games in 2001, where he worked with Jacobs. He has also worked several summer camps for Division I volleyball programs.
Spector played volleyball at University High School in Los Angeles where he was Western League First-Team and Second Team All-City in 1987-88. In his senior season, he was named as Volleyball Monthly?s (now Volleyball Magazine) 26th best player in the nation. He played for NCAA Division I San Diego State University from 1988-89 and was a member of the US Junior National Volleyball team in 1988. Spector played in three International Maccabbi Games (1989, 1993, and 1997) and his team was awarded bronze in 1993 and 1997. In 2001, he again participated in the Maccabbi Games, where he nabbed two silver medals, one for coaching the women and one for playing with the men.
Spector is a member of the United States Association of Volleyball (USAV), American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and American Association of Physical Education Health Recreation and Dance (AAPEHRD).
Greg and his wife Lisa were married May 31, 2003 in La Jolla, Calif.
