Recent Baseball Signee Drafted by Pittsburgh
6/5/2003
Marshall University signee Jake Cuffman was selected on the first day of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft in round 14 by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Butler (Pa.) High School product is a 6-4 right-handed pitcher who will bring his 92 mph fastball to Huntington, W.Va., next spring in his freshman campaign.
"We've been trying to bring that kind of talent in with our recruiting efforts," Marshall pitching coach Tom Carty said. "We hope that Jake can improve his draft status over the course of his career at Marshall."
Cuffman has been compared to a Matt Clement-type pitcher who possesses great size and the ability to cut his fastball and move the ball around in the strike zone.
Cuffman joins Chris Monaco, another recent MU signee, as the only two members of the Thundering Herd under head coach Dave Piepenbrink to be drafted out of high school. Monaco, an outfielder, was selected with a compensatory pick in the 52nd round of the 2001 entry draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
