Rembert Named to Butkus Award List
8/22/2003
ORLANDO, Fla. - Marshall University's J.T. Rembert was named to the 2003 Butkus Award watch list by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Wednesday.
"J.T. is an outstanding candidate for the award," Thundering Herd head coach Bob Pruett said. "I'm really proud of all of our linebacker play and hopefully our team will do well enough to move him up the list."
Rembert, a six-foot-one, 227-pound junior from Columbia, Maryland, saw action in every game last season for the Herd and ranked seventh on the team in total tackles with 72. He also recorded two interceptions and returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown against Buffalo last season.
Rembert was one of eight Mid-American Conference linebackers to make the list of 90 candidates. The other seven include Dennis Chukwuemeka of Ohio, Nick Duffy of Northern Illinois, Anthony Henriquez of Kent State, Keon Jackson of Toledo, Terrell Jones of Miami, Stanford Rhule of UCF, and Lorenzo Scott of Ball State.
The independent selection committee for the 2003 Butkus Award, comprised of 26 of the nation's foremost media members, is solely responsible for all voting in the selection process. Players may be added to the list throughout the season.
The Butkus Award Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 16. That list will be cut down to three finalists, who will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award officials on Thursday, November 13. The winner will be announced Friday, December 12, 2003 at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, FL.
Created in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Inc., the Butkus Award carries the name and support of one of the greatest middle linebackers in football history, Dick Butkus. The Butkus Award is regarded as one of the most elite individual honors in college football.
