HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd men's soccer team shut out the High Point Panthers 1-0 Friday night at Sam Hood Field.
Granit Caushaj, the goal scorer in Monday's game against St. Peter's, kept his hot streak going by scoring the only goal of the contest against High Point. The goal was assisted by Brandon Mason. Caushaj scored at the 44:08 mark, giving the Herd the lead going into the half.
The Panthers came out shooting in the second half, but Marshall goalie Joe Nebel made seven saves, including one in the final minute, to preserve the win for the Herd. The defense, led by Captain Paul Dirou and Rob Clouse, played well in front of Nebel to contribute to the win. High Point came close to tying the game at the 74:09 mark, but their shot hit the post.
High Point outshot the Herd, 16-13. Granit Caushaj led the way for the Herd, tallying up five shots, including the team's lone goal. Kirk Rudder and Chris Archer led High Point with four shots each.
Marshall Coach Bob Gray was very pleased with the effort. "It is good to get a win, I am proud of the team, they played hard. We are still a young team, a little inexperienced, but we stayed in our system and were successful."
The Herd will start a five game road trip on Sunday when they face Robert Morris. They will also play in the Birmingham Southern Tournament, which begins on September 12, and the William & Mary Tournament, which is on September 19.
The team returns home on September 26 when they face Western Michigan. It is their first Mid-American Conference match. The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
