HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Big Green Scholarship Foundation has announced that Dr. Dorothy Hicks will endow a scholarship for the Marshall University volleyball program in honor of Linda Holmes.
Holmes was the first female athletic administrator at Marshall when the Thundering Herd women?s programs were moved from the women?s physical education department to the University?s general athletic department. She was influential in the continued development of women?s sports at Marshall, serving as an athlete before moving on to coach volleyball, tennis and softball.
?I am extremely honored that Dr. Hicks would do something like this that would allow volleyball players the privilege of participating at Marshall University,? Holmes said. ?I?m humbled by her generosity.?
?I want to honor the women who were instrumental in the growth of women?s athletics at Marshall,? Hicks said, ?and Linda more than exemplifies that.?
Following a stellar playing career at MU, which included leading the volleyball team to its first ever W.Va. Women?s Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in 1973 and 1974, Holmes would go on to make considerable contributions to Marshall athletics as a coach of three sports and as an assistant athletic director. She is the all-time winningest volleyball coach in Marshall history with over 159 wins in seven seasons. Her team?s 31 wins in 1980 is still the best single-season mark in school history. She served as the senior women?s administrator and assistant athletic director from 1976 to 1984.
Holmes was inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
