Herd Volleyball Set to Square Off Against Zips
11/1/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall volleyball team hits the floor Tuesday night against the Akron Zips in match four of the Herd?s current six-match home stand. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall enters the contest with a record of 16-9 overall and is 7-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Herd also sits alone at second place in the MAC East Division, three matches ahead of Miami and trailing undefeated Ohio.
The Zips enter the contest with an overall record of 12-11 and a 4-7 mark in MAC play. One of Akron?s conference losses came at the hands of the Thundering Herd at Akron in September. Marshall downed the Zips, 3-0 at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Thundering Herd has won two straight and is 8-1 on the floor at the Cam Henderson Center this season. Akron lost, 3-1, to Toledo in its last match.
Last season, the Herd knocked the No. 4 seeded Zips out of the MAC tournament in Ball State and with a 3-0 win to advance to the tournament finals. Marshall has won three of four against the Zips.
Heading into Tuesday night?s match, the Herd is led by freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) , who broke the Marshall single season kills record last week and currently stands atop the MAC at 5.79 kills per game. Billingy has 544 kills on the year.
Marshall?s junior setterKatie Stein (Sussex, Wis.), topped the 4,000 assist mark in the Herd?s 3-1 win over Buffalo, Sunday evening. She is only the second player in Marshall history to eclipse the 4,000 echelon.
The Zips are led by Emily Kocinski with 306 kills and Emily Rush with 12.48 assists per game.
WMUL 88.1-FM will broadcast the match with a live webcast also available at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
