12/3/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd hosts 2004 "Sweet 16" participant UAB Saturday evening at the Cam Henderson Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Marshall enters the contest with a 1-3 record, while the Blazers enter the game with a perfect 3-0 record.
In the Herd's last time out, Marshall opened Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan with a 90-88 loss to the Eagles in the Convocation Center. Marshall trailed by 17 points with 8:36 to go in the game, but the Herd rallied to have the game-tying attempt with 11 seconds to go in regulation. MU could not capitalize on the opportunity, as a pair of 3-point shots were off the mark. Junior forward Mark Patton had the first Herd double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 points, while freshman guard Joe Miles continued his stellar play with a team-high 20 points. LaVar Carter scored a career-high 14 points and blocked a career-best six shots to go along with eight rebounds in a solid effort. Tre Whitted added 11 points, while freshman Casey Wohlleb added career bests in points and rebounds with ten and five, respectively.
UAB enters tonight?s contest with a 3-0 record, with tonight?s game in the Henderson Center being their first road contest of the season. The Blazers have also been busy as of late, with tonight?s game being their fourth game in seven days. Guard Donell Taylor leads a trio of players in double-figures at 16.7 points per game; Demario Eddins (11.0) and Ronell Taylor (10.0) are the other two blazers averaging double-digits. Forward Marques Lewis leads UAB on the boards, averaging 5.7 rebounds per contest.
In the Blazers' last time out, UAB knocked off Big 12 opponent Nebraska, 80-66, in Bartow Arena on Thursday night. Marques Lewis led the Blazers with 19 points, while Donell Taylor added 15, Demario Eddins chipped in 11, and Ronell Taylor poured in ten points in the victory. UAB forced 24 Cornhusker turnovers and had 12 steals on the night, while shooting 43.1% from the floor.
This is the second-ever meeting between the two schools, and is the return engagement of a home-and-home agreement which began last year with a 68-66 Herd win at Bartow Arena, the only loss for UAB at home in 15 tries in 2003-04. However, this series will be a constant starting next season, when both Marshall and UAB will participate in Conference USA?s East Division.
Tickets for the game are $18 for a lower bowl seat, $8 for an upper bowl ticket. The game can be heard live on the Thundering Herd/ISP Radio Network throughout West Virginia and on HerdZone.com.
