CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston Cougars tallied 13 hits en route to a 14-4 victory Friday at Patriots Point Field in the Herd's first game of the Charleston Challenge.

The game started off promising for the Herd as junior Chris Monaco (Tuscon, AZ) led off with a single, his first as a member of the Herd. He followed that up by stealing second, but things quickly went down hill from there.

The Cougars recorded three quick outs to keep the Herd from scoring and began their rout in the bottom of the first when Byron Barber scored on a fielder's choice after a triple and Brett Anderson hit a home run to give the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead.

Cougars pitcher Ryan Johnson put Marshall down in order in the top of the second and allowed one hit in the third by shortstop Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.).

The Herd got into more trouble in the bottom of the third when starting pitcher Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE) gave up two more runs and loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) was brought in and gave up three more hits in the inning. The Cougars held an 8-0 lead at the end of three.

The bottom of the fourth brought about more trouble for Marshall as the Cougars added on six more runs to gain a 14-0 lead.

Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) came into the game in the bottom of the fifth and proceeded to pitch three scoreless innings. He allowed only one hit over that span. Senior Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, IL) pitched a hitless bottom of the eighth inning.

Marshall showed a spark in the top of the eighth when Matt Megee (Georgetown, DE) notched his first hit as a member of the Thundering Herd. That was followed up by a double by Chris Monaco. Chris Peak (Barboursville, WV) grounded out to second to score Megee and end the Cougar's shutout bid. Monaco later scored on a Cougar error. Freshman catcher Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) followed that up with a two-run homerun, the first of his collegiate career, to cut the Cougars lead to 14-4.

The rally by the Herd ended there when Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) was thrown out at home after a single by Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL). Marshall was scoreless in the ninth.

Henning took the loss, which dropped his record to 0-2. He gave up six runs on six hits in two innings pitched. The Herd also had five errors for the game.

The loss dropped Marshall to 0-4 and the win kept the College of Charleston undefeated at 3-0. The action resumes on Saturday at noon when the Herd faces off against George Mason at Patriots Point Field. Stay tuned to www.HerdZone.com for updates on the Herd's progress at the Charleston Challenge.
