BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Fresh off of their first win of the season on Sunday, the Thundering Herd baseball team returns to action this weekend for a three-game series against the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers at Young Memorial Field.
The Herd won their last outing on Sunday afternoon - a 13-inning, 8-6 win over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. With the win, the Herd improved their record to 1-5.
This weekend's series will be a preview of things to come as it will give the Herd the opportunity to compete against future Conference USA competition. The two teams met in 2003 for the first time, with UAB defeating Marshall by a score of 12-1.
The Blazers enter the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record. A 13-inning 3-2 win over Birmingham Southern on Tuesday night kept their record intact. UAB's unbeaten streak is currently at eight, dating back to last season.
Hoping to continue his hot streak this weekend is senior Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ). Larmore is batting .400 with seven RBI's, including five in Sunday's win. Junior Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) played in his first game at Marshall last Friday and batted .357 in the three-game series.
Pitcher Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) had two strong outings last weekend, pitching five scoreless innings of relief, while allowing only one hit.
The series starts with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday evening. Saturday's game takes place at 12 p.m. and the series wraps up with a game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
