Eagles Defeat Herd, 7-3, To Complete Series Sweep

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Herd offense was limited to only four hits and two runs as the Eastern Michigan Eagles defeated the Herd, 7-3, Sunday to complete the series sweep.
The Eagles (8-10, 3-0 MAC) took a 1-0 lead off of MU starting pitcher Grant Harper (Grayson, KY) in the bottom of the second inning. Marshall (11-14, 0-3 MAC) responded in the top of the third. After Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) reached on an error, Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) hit a double down the third base line to advance Glevenyak to third to bring up Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ). Monaco hit into a fielder?s choice to bring Glevenyak home and tie the game at one.
EMU regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Brian Bixler led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielder?s choice. Eagle Derek Peterson notched an RBI single to left to gave EMU a 2-1 lead. The Herd again came back. This time, Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) led off the fourth inning with a single. After the Eagles got the first out, they committed two errors to load up the bases for Glevenyak, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Larmore to tie the game back up.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles tallied three more runs to take a 5-2 lead. After the first batter reached on an error, EMU third baseman Matt Moffett hit a home run to center to give EMU a 4-2 lead. With one out, Eagle Tremaine Riley hit a double and stole third to bring up Bixler, who notched his third hit of the day to bring in Riley and give the Eagles the 5-2 lead. EMU threatened again in the fifth, having men on first and third with no outs, but Grant Harper was able to get Eagle Brad Hrovat to hit a foul ball to first to get the first out and got a double play to end the inning.
Marshall cut into the lead in the top of the seventh. With two on and one out, Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) hit a single to right to load the bases. After Larmore hit into a fielder?s choice, Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) walked to make it a 5-3 EMU lead. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) grounded out to second to end the inning.
Eastern took advantage of the Herd leaving the bases loaded in the inning, adding on two more runs in the bottom of the inning. After Ryan Ford singled to lead off, Derek Peterson hit a home run to left-center to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead.
Marshall was unable to overcome the lead, only managing one base runner in the eighth and ninth innings. EMU struck out the final three MU batters to seal the win.
Harper took the loss, dropping his record to 3-3. He went seven innings, allowing seven runs. Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL) pitched a scoreless eighth inning. The Herd managed only four hits and two runs against the Eastern Michigan pitching staff.
The Herd returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Louisville for a game before returning home for the Mid-American Conference home opening series against the Miami Redhawks. Admission to all home games is free.
