Baseball Wins Home Opener, 10-3, Over WVSC

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Thundering Herd baseball team took game one of today?s home-opening doubleheader against West Virginia State College by a score of 10-3. The second game of the doubleheader was called after four innings due to rain.
In the first game, freshman Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, PA) got his first collegiate start and made the most of it, pitching six innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
The Herd got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first innings when Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) led things off with a single, extending his hit streak to seven, recording a hit in every game as a member of the Thundering Herd. After stealing second, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) walked to reach base, and Coach Piepenbrink called a double steal where Frederick stole second and Monaco stole home to give MU a 1-0 lead. Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) hit a double to bring in Frederick and extend the lead to 2-0.
Marshall added three more runs in the second. Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to add on another run and Adam Frederick notched his second hit of the day, a double, to bring in two more runs. They added on another run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0.
West Virginia State notched their first run of the game in the fifth after Gerald Hager hit into a fielder?s choice to bring in a run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Marshall added two more runs. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) hit his first home run of the year to left-center. Another run was added when Adam Frederick hit another double to bring in Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ), who hit a double of his own to reach base.
WVSC cut Marshall?s lead to 8-3 after Chrisman allowed two runs on two hits in the innings. The Herd got the runs back in the bottom of the sixth when Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) hit a home run to add one run. Another was added when Mike Koitsopoulos hit a single for his second RBI of the day.
In game one, Monaco went 2-3, Frederick went 3-3 with four RBI?s and Koitsopoulos went 2-3 with two RBI?s.
The second game was suspended due to rain after four innings. West Virginia State held a 4-1 lead at that point. No make-up date has been announced.
With their second straight win today, the Herd improves to 3-7-0. The loss drops WVSC to 4-3-0. The home-stand for the Marshall baseball team continues this weekend with a contest Friday at 2 p.m. against Concord and a three-game weekend series against Niagara at University Heights. Admission is free to all home games.
