KENT, Ohio - A late rally by the Herd took the game into extra innings, but the Kent State Golden Flashes proved to be too much as they downed Marshall, 5-4, in 12 innings on Sunday at Gene Michael Field.

Kent State (15-17, 5-4 MAC) got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Joe Tucker hit an RBI double in the gap in left center to give them a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, they made it a 2-0 lead when Matt Sega hit a home run off of Marshall (13-20, 1-7 MAC) starting pitcher Grant Harper (Grayson, KY).

The Herd got things going in the top of the fifth when Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) drew a two out walk. After Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) reached on an error, Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) hit an RBI single to cut Kent State?s lead to 2-1.

A sacrifice fly by Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) in the top of the sixth tied the game at two. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) reached base on an error and advanced to second. A sacrifice bunt by Marshall Murray (Walnut Creek, CA) advanced Larmore to third and he scored on the ball hit by Frederick.

The momentum for MU was short-lived as KSU took a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Matt Sega reached on a Koitsopoulos error and was brought home when Chuck Moore hit a double to center field.

Marshall did not give up and came back to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) notched his second hit of the day, this time a double, to lead off the inning. Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) came in to pinch run and scored on a two-out single hit by Adam Frederick to tie the game at three.

Frederick struck again in the top of the 12th inning. With one out, Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) notched a double to left field. After an intentional walk to Larmore, Matt Megee (Georgetown, DE) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought up Frederick, whose single tied the game in the eighth. He notched a single to left to bring in Stieger and give MU a 4-3 lead. Francois Larmore was waved around third, but was thrown out at home.

Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, retiring all 13 batters he faced. Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) came into the game in the bottom of the 12th. He put men on first and third with no outs. After getting the first out, he intentionally walked Joe Tucker to load the bases. That brought up Andrew Davis, who hit a single to bring in two runs and give KSU a 5-3 win.

Meadows took the loss, dropping his record to 1-3. Kent State out hit MU, 9-8. Frederick led the way, going 3-4. Rich Russell recorded two hits on the day. Chris Monaco got a stolen base, his fourth of the series, for a MAC-leading 26.

Baseball will travel to Eastern Kentucky for a contest on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. before returning home for a big conference series against Ohio University. The action at the Heights starts on Friday at 3 p.m. when the Herd and Bobcats square off in game one of the series.
