Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against New York Tech

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? The Marshall baseball team swept the Bears of New York Tech in a Saturday doubleheader at University Heights. They took the first game by a 9-7 score and dominated game two, earning a 7-1 victory.
In game one, the Herd (17-21, 3-8 MAC) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Brad Helm (Downington, PA) hit a single for MU?s first hit of the day. After Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) reached base on an error, Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Helm for the first run of the game. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) later hit a two-RBI double to give the Herd a 3-0 lead.
New York Tech (11-21) scored their first run in the top of the fourth before Marshall responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) hit a single, which was followed up by a double to center by Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL). Helm was next and grounded out to second to score Frederick.
The Bears made it a 4-2 game, scoring a run in the fourth off of MU starter Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, PA). After the first two batters of the sixth inning reached base, Chrisman was pulled in favor of Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL). Ziroli struggled in the inning, getting the first two outs, but allowing four runs on three hits. Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE) gave up a two RBI single before getting out of the inning. The Bears scored a total of five runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead.
The Herd came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Frederick doubled and was brought in when Brad Helm notched his second single of the day. Koitsopoulos and Monaco hit consecutive singles to bring in Helm for the second run of the inning. With Koitsopoulos on third, Monaco stole second to put two in scoring position. Aaron Jamieson was next and hit his second sacrifice fly of the day to tie the game.
Marshall took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) hit a single and advanced to second when Glevenyak was walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Koitsopoulos hit a single to give MU a 9-7 lead.
Grant Harper (Grayson, KY) pitched a scoreless eighth inning before closer Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) closed things out in the ninth, earning his fifth save of the season. Scott Henning took the win, bringing his record to 4-5.
Game two saw Marshall take a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jamieson was issued a one out walk and scored when Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) hit a double to center. In the fourth, O?Bryan notched his second double of the game to lead off the inning. After Frederick walked, Glevenyak reached base on an error, scoring O?Bryan. Brad Helm hit into a fielder?s choice to score Frederick.
The Herd added on another run in the fifth before putting three more on the board in the bottom of the eighth. In the eighth, Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) hit a leadoff single. That was followed up by three more singles to score two runs. With one out, Koitsopoulos notched his third hit of the day to score the third run of the inning, giving Marshall the 7-0 lead. The Bears scored their only run of the game in the top of the ninth.
The pitching in game two was impressive. Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) was given his first collegiate start and pitched five strong innings, giving up only two hits. Henning pitched two scoreless innings before Harper pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits. Cummings earned the win improving his record to 2-2. The pitching staff limited NYIT to five hits in game two.
Helm, Frederick and Koitsopoulos each had three hits on the day. Helm also led the team with four RBI?s. Monaco stole a base in each game, extending his MAC-leading total to 28.
MU will look for the series sweep on Sunday. The starting time for Sunday?s game has been moved to 12 p.m. due to the threat of rain in the afternoon. The contest will take place at University Heights and admission is free.
