After Larmore reached on an error and Russell singled, Frederick hit his second home run of the year to bring in three more runs. Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), already 2-2 on the day, followed Frederick?s home run up with a solo shot of his own to give MU an 11-1 lead. Morehead State scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but MU responded in the top of the seventh, scoring two more runs on three hits to make it a 14-2 game.
Coach Piepenbrink pulled Grant Harper after the sixth inning and brought in freshman Troy Wilson (Saegertown, PA). Wilson struggled, with eight runs scoring in the inning. With two runs already in, the bases were loaded for Jesse Howell, who hit a grand slam to make it a 14-8 game. The Eagles scored two more runs in the inning to come to within four. Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ont.) got the final out of the inning.
Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL) entered the game with one out in the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings to clinch the Herd?s fourth straight win.
Harper got the win, improving his record to 4-4. He was helped by the Herd offense, which tallied 14 runs on 19 hits. Glevenyak led the way, going 5-5 with two RBI?s. Frederick and Russell both had four RBI?s. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) contributed three hits while four others had two hits apiece.
With the win, Harper has a career total of 17. That is tied for second in school history with Sean Reeder and Greg Kappas. Albie DeYoung is the all-time win leader with 19.
The bats quieted down in the second game, as the scoring did not start until the bottom of the third inning. After getting the first two batters out, starter Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) let the next two batters reach base. Next up was Travis Rima, who hit a home run to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
They added two more runs in the fourth and notched another run when Lance Seasor hit a solo shot to give Morehead State a 6-0 lead. They would keep the Herd scoreless in the final innings to earn a 6-0 win. MSU pitcher Luke Lockwood pitched the complete game.
