Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Morehead
4/6/2004
- Game One
- Game Two
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? The Marshall University baseball team split a Tuesday doubleheader with the Eagles of Morehead State University. The Herd took game one by a 5-1 margin, but dropped the second game, 6-5.
Game one was highlighted by the brilliant pitching effort of senior Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE). Henning had his best outing of the season, pitching a complete seven-inning game, allowing one run on four hits. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
While Henning was retiring the Eagles (6-20, 0-6 Ohio Valley), the Herd (12-18, 0-5 MAC) offense did what it needed to do. The scoring started in the bottom of the second when Mid-American Conference Co-Player of the Week, Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) recorded his sixth straight hit, a leadoff double, to continue the streak. With one out, Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) hit a single to bring in O?Bryan and give MU the 1-0 lead.
Marshall kept things going in the third when Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) led the inning off with a home run, his second of the season. After Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) reached on an error, Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) notched a single to put two on with no outs. With one out, Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) grounded out to first to bring in Koitsopoulos and make it a 3-0 lead. Next up was O?Bryan, who got his seventh straight hit to bring in Monaco and make it a 4-0 lead.
One more run was added on in the fourth after Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) doubled and advanced to third and home on wild pitches by Morehead pitcher Cody Sorrell. Morehead got their only run of the game in the top of the sixth.
Marshall out-hit Morehead, 6-4 in the game. O?Bryan had two hits while four other players had one hit each. Henning improved his record to 3-5 with the win. His complete game was the first of the year for the MU pitching staff.
In game two, the Herd took the lead in the first when Eagles pitcher Donnie Spencer loaded the bases with no outs. That brought up the hot hitting O?Bryan, who grounded into a double play to bring in a run. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) grounded out to first to end the inning, with MU being able to score only one run.
Starter Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) pitched two hitless innings, before allowing a run in the third to tie the game. He ran into serious problems in the fourth. After getting the first two batters out, Dobies allowed two walks and a double to load the bases and bring up Brian Ingram. Ingram, batting .224 going into the day, hit a grand slam to center for his first home run of the season. The grand slam gave the Eagles a 5-1 lead.
Adam Frederick knocked in a run in the bottom of the fourth, and Glevenyak hit a double in the fifth to bring in a run and make it a 5-3 game, but the Eagles came back in the sixth with another run to make it a 6-3 lead.
Marshall made a charge in the bottom of the eighth. With two out, Brad Helm (Downington, PA) was issued a walk to reach base and advanced to third on a Koitsopoulos single. He scored after pitcher Michael Rebok balked. Koitsopoulos scored on a wild pitch after another wild pitch advanced him to third. The run made it a 6-5 game. Chris Monaco kept it going after he walked and proceeded to steal second, his second stolen base of the day, to bring up Jamieson. Jamieson battled it out to a 3-2 count, but struck out to end the inning.
Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep Marshall in the game heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Herd?s comeback attempt and the strong pitching were not enough as the Eagles were able to get out of the inning with only one base runner.
With the win in game two, Morehead ended a 12-game losing streak. Their record improved to 6-20. The split brought MU?s record to 12-18. Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) took the loss in game two after allowing a run in the top of the sixth. Marshall hit the ball well in both games, with three players registering three hits over the course of the doubleheader. Frederick, Glevenyak and O?Bryan completed the feat. Jamieson had the only home run of the day for Marshall and Chris Monaco notched two stolen bases for a MAC-leading total of 22.
Baseball will take to the road this weekend for an important MAC series at Kent State. The Golden Flashes are 11-16 and 3-3 in conference play heading into the weekend. Marshall will travel to Eastern Kentucky for a game next Wednesday before heading back to University Heights for a three-game series against the Ohio Bobcats.
