Baseball Starts Final Weekend With Win Over Buffalo

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? The Marshall University baseball team began its final weekend of the season with an 8-4 win over the Buffalo Bulls Friday at University Heights.
The Herd (25-27, 8-13 MAC) started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead when Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) led the inning off with a solo home run.
Buffalo (15-37, 4-16 MAC) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on MU pitcher Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV). The first five batters reached base on two hits, two walks and an error. Andrew Wengert had a two RBI double for the Bulls.
Marshall came right back with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) led the inning off with a walk and stolen base. Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) was also walked to bring up Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), who hit a three-run home run to left field to give MU a 4-3 lead.
After Glevenyak?s home run, Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) walked and Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) singled to put two runners on. With one out, Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) doubled to bring in both runners. Later in the inning, Adam Frederick hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the sixth run of the inning.
Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) notched an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 8-3. Buffalo added a run in the ninth, but was not able to muster any more offense and took the 8-4 loss.
Taking the win for Marshall was senior Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL). He came into the game in the third inning in relief of Cummings and threw three shutout innings, allowing only one hit. His record improves to 3-1 on the season.
Marshall out-hit Buffalo, 11-8. McConnell, Glevenyak and Russell each had two hits for the Herd. Glevenyak led the team with three runs batted in while McConnell had two with his double in the fourth.
Game two of the series will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at University Heights. If the Herd can take the final two games of the series, it will tie the school win record of 27 set in 1978. Sunday will mark Senior Day for the team as the eight seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments with the team.
