HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? A five run first inning was all the Herd needed to earn its second win of the weekend against Buffalo. With a win on Sunday, Marshall will not only earn their first Mid-American Conference sweep of the season, but tie the all-time season win record set in 1978.
Marshall (26-27, 9-13 MAC) starting pitcher Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) started the game off with a scoreless first inning to bring up the Herd offense. The offense did not disappoint, tallying five runs in the inning. Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) led off the inning with a single and two stolen bases to extend his single season record to 38.
With one out, Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) walked to bring up Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD), who singled to bring in Monaco. Up next was Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA), who hit an RBI single and also stole second. Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) reached base on an error, which scored the third run of the inning. Later in the inning, Brad Helm (Downington, PA) hit a sacrifice fly and Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) had an RBI single to give the Herd a 5-0 lead.
After that point, Bulls (15-38, 4-17 MAC) pitcher Eric Kelly settled down, keeping the Herd hitless until the bottom of the fifth. The Bulls scored their first run of the game in the top of the inning on a hit by James Kingsley, but in the bottom of the inning, Joe Glevenyak hit a solo home run, his second of the series, to get back the five run lead.
The Herd added on three more runs in the game. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) singled in a run in the sixth while Helm and McConnell each had RBI singles in the seventh. The Bulls scored a run in the top of the eighth, but got no closer as Marshall took game two, 9-2.
Koutsavlis pitched a gem for the third straight weekend. He went eight inning Saturday, giving up two runs, one earned, on ten hits. He earned a win for the third weekend in a row and improved his record to 4-5. Koutsavlis went seven innings in a win at Akron two weeks ago and followed that up with an eight inning performance at Ball State last weekend. Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, IL) pitched a hitless ninth inning.
Marshall?s hot offense recorded 14 hits off of the Buffalo pitching staff. Five players recorded two hits on the day. Glevenyak led the way, notching two hits, one home run, and scoring three runs. Chris Monaco had a strong day, going 2-4, scoring twice and registering two stolen bases. Adam Frederick continued his hot hitting, going 2-4. Francois Larmore had a hit, extending his hit streak to 12 games.
Sunday will mark the final game of the season for the Marshall baseball team and also will be Senior Day at University Heights. The eight seniors on the team will be honored prior to the game. With a win on Sunday against Buffalo, the Herd can tie the season win record of 27 set in 1978.
