AKRON, Ohio - After taking the first two games of the series, the Thundering Herd baseball team fell in the series finale at Akron by a score of 13-1.

Akron jumped out on top of the Herd, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning. They loaded the bases on Herd starter Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, PA) and scored a run when Bob Dubovec hit into a double play. Marshall came right back and tied the game in the top of the second. With one out and batters on second and third, Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) hit into a fielder?s choice to score a run. The Zips threatened in the top of the third when leadoff hitter Andy Capraruolo hit a double and advanced to third, but they were unable to capitalize as Chrisman struck out the side to get out of the inning.

He was not as fortunate in the bottom of the fourth. The bases were loaded with one out, and Marshall was able to get the second out on a fielder?s choice with the runner out at home. With the bases still loaded, the next two batters, Capraruolo and Charlie Lenhard, each recorded two-RBI hits to give Akron a 5-1 lead.

The Zips added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Grant Harper (Grayson, KY) came into the game in relief of Chrisman and gave up two singles to begin the innings and a run scored on a fielder?s choice. An error and a walk loaded the bases and forced Marshall to make a change and bring in leftie Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE). The first batter he faced was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and was followed by a two-RBI single to give Akron a 9-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) came into the game. With the pitching appearance, the 92nd of his career, he is only one behind Matt Speicher?s Mid-American Conference record of 93. Speicher pitched at Ball State from 1996-99. The appearance was not a memorable one for Meadows, as four runs scored in the inning on three hits, a walk and an error. In the eighth, he struck out the side.

The Marshall offense was held scoreless after the second inning and was limited to only eight hits in the game. Chrisman took the loss and dropped to 3-3 on the season. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) and Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) each had two hits for MU.

The Herd returns home for a game against Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at University Heights. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. Marshall will then head to Ball State next weekend for the final MAC road series of the season.
