Jacobs Selected to Coach U.S. Collegians in Italy
6/16/2004
Mitch Jacobs has won nearly 60 percent of his matches in his two years at Marshall. |
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Marshall University head volleyball coach Mitch Jacobs has been selected to coach one of two teams from the United States that will participate in the under-20 Sibillini Tournament in Italy from June 27 to July 4.
Jacobs, Marshall?s third-year coach, will head one of the U.S. Collegiate Select Teams in the 10-team field in Italy later in the month. The U.S. teams, Team VolleyHut and Team Third Degree, are comprised of NCAA stars under the age of 20 from schools around the nation, stemming primarily from Pac-10 and Big Ten institutions. Thundering Herd junior setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) was invited to participate in the international tournament, but is unable due to academic obligations at MU.
Jacobs? team will battle European squads from Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia. The tournament takes place in the central Italian town of Sibillini, but players and staff will enjoy the beautiful Adriatic Coast throughout their stay while training in Rome.
?It is a big honor to be selected to coach in this wonderful international tournament,? Jacobs said. ?It was easy to say ?yes? when (U.S. team director) Tim Kelly invited me to participate.
?It?s a great opportunity to coach several high-level players against a terrific field of teams.?
Team VolleyHut won 2003?s silver medal and Team Third Degree brought home the bronze. Slovakia was crowned champions in last year?s tournament. No U.S. team has won the gold medal in the 10-year history of the tournament.
A daily journal from staff and players will be kept and posted on VolleyCentral.com. Use the above link to access this journal once the tournament begins.
