Marshall Golfer Shawn Warren Claims Charlie?s Maine Open

8/18/2004

Marshall sophomore golfer Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) became the first amateur to win the Charlie?s Maine Open since 1971 when he defeated Todd Westfall, a Marshall graduate and native of Clendenin, W.Va., in a four-hole playoff this past weekend. Warren, the Herd?s leading returning men?s golfer, begins practice for the 2004-05 campaign on August 23rd, the first day of school.

The tournament had pro and amateur players competing. It was Warren's first win at the event, although he did finish as the low amateur on one other occasion.

Warren drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole of a four-hole playoff last Friday morning to defeat Westfall after the tournament was shortened from 54 holes to 36 holes on Thursday evening. Riverside Golf Course, the site of the tournament, was deemed unplayable after three inches of rain and officials decided on the format after both finished the first two rounds at 9-under par, 135.

The playoff began on the 15th hole and ended on the 18th. Both golfers entered the 18th tied, but Westfall watched Warren make his birdie on the final hole. He could not make a birdie of his own to force the match to another hole.

Warren was ecstatic to win a tournament on his home turf, especially with so many friends and family in attendance.

?It was an awesome tournament to win,? said Warren, who was an All-MAC selection as a freshman last season and finished second in the Freshman of the Year race in the conference. ?I had a lot of my friends and family there watching and following me. By the end, there was about 200 people in the gallery supporting me, which was great.?

Warren headlines the list of returnees for head coach Joe Feaganes and the 2004-05 edition of the Marshall men?s golf team. Feaganes, entering his 33rd year as head coach of the Thundering Herd, is excited about Warren and the upcoming year.

?Shawn was one of our top reformers last season, and from the looks of it, it looks like he?s had a great summer,? said Feaganes. ?I hope he can channel this summer?s success into the upcoming golf season.?

The Marshall golf team will once again play in a number of quality tournaments, including tournaments at Pinehurst, N.C. and St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

?I?m real excited to get back to school,? said Warren. ?We play in some good tournaments this year, and I?m ready to get it started.?
