Herd Travels To WVU Looking For Third Straight Win
9/14/2004
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - After taking the University of Central Florida Tournament, the Marshall University men's soccer team will look to keep the momentum going against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday.
West Virginia (2-2-0) won last year's game against Marshall (2-2-0), 1-0 in overtime. That game was held in Charleston. This year, the Herd will look for a different result and its first win over WVU since 2000.
Karim Boukhemis (Huntington, WV) had a strong weekend for the Herd, tallying both double overtime game-winning goals at the UCF Tournament. Jonathan Buxton (Virginia Beach, VA) and Kirk Gibson (Allen, TX) scored the other goals over the weekend.
WVU is coming off of a weekend split at the Virginia Tech Classic. After beating Liberty, 2-1, the Mountaineers fell to Virginia Tech, 1-0. WVU leads the series against Marshall, 14-5-1.
Prior to last season's overtime win, WVU won the matchup in 2001, 3-0. In 2000, Marshall was on the winning end of a 2-1 decision in Huntington.
"This is a great rivalry for our program and the whole state," Marshall coach Bob Gray said. "We hope to keep the momentum from last weekend going and hopefully we can get a big win up there."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
