Herd Men's Soccer Begins Conference Season
9/23/2004
LEXINGTON, Ky. - After winning the home opener against Cleveland State, the Thundering Herd men's soccer team will look to keep things going when it opens the Mid-American Conference schedule Friday at Kentucky.
Kentucky (4-2-1, 1-0 MAC) topped Marshall (3-3, 0-0 MAC) 1-0 in overtime last season in Huntington. The Wildcats will be trying to continue their seven game MAC win streak dating back to last season. Over that span, they have held opponents scoreless and have a 633 minute and ten second conference shutout streak.
The Wildcats have won three of the last four meetings with Marshall. In their last meeting at UK, the Herd pulled out a 2-1 win. UK was picked by the MAC coaches to win the regular season and the conference tournament.
Things do not get any easier for Marshall as it will then travel to Bowling Green (0-8) to take on the Falcons Sunday afternoon. Bowling Green is coming off of a tough non-conference schedule, which saw them get outscored by a 26-3 margin. They have been held scoreless over the last five games. Prior to their matchup against Marshall, BGSU will take on Ohio State Friday night.
In last year's meeting with the Falcons, Marshall earned a hard fought 1-0 win at Sam Hood Field.
The team is excited to get the conference season rolling and will look to keep its strong play going. "The MAC will be tough this year, we cannot do a lot of the things we did against some of our other opponents and expect to win," Herd coach Bob Gray said. "The guys are excited to get things going, both teams this weekend are pretty good, so it will give us a good idea of where we stand in the conference."
Friday's game at Kentucky is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday's game against the Falcons will start at 2 p.m..
