HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall men's soccer's Jeff Lenix (So., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The honor is the first career player of the week award for Lenix, and it marks the second straight for a Marshall player, as goalkeeper Greg Terhune earned the same distinction last week.
Lenix was instrumental in the Thundering Herd's solid defensive performance throughout the past weekend. In matches against Memphis and UAB, the top two scoring teams in Conference USA, respectively, Marshall allowed just one goal.
Sunday, the Herd posted a 1-0 shutout over Memphis, which had not been blanked all season. The Tigers entered the contest averaging 15.9 shots per game but were held to just eight Sunday by the stingy Marshall defense. The defense has stepped up over the last five matches, allowing just four goals as the Herd has posted a 4-1 record.
Lenix also was an ironman throughout the weekend, starting and playing all 90 minutes at defense in each of the contests.
SMU's Duke Hashimoto earned Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Marshall (6-8-1, 4-3-1 C-USA) holds second place outright in Conference USA entering the final weekend of the league schedule. The Herd travels to Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. Friday to wrap up its conference slate.
