HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team looks to continue its solid play as it ends the regular season Wednesday at Radford. Game time is 5 p.m. at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium in Radford, Va.
Currently Marshall (6-8-2, 4-3-2 Conference USA) holds down the No. 4 position in Conference USA entering the final the weekend of league play. South Carolina, Florida International, UCF and East Carolina all had matches postponed two weeks ago because of Hurricane Wilma, and those games will be made up this weekend. The top eight teams in the conference earn bids to the league tournament. Marshall already has clinched a berth in the tournament.
Marshall comes off a scoreless draw Friday at Kentucky. Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) posted his second-consecutive shutout and third in the last four games. The Herd defense has buckled down over the last three weeks, holding opponents to four goals in the last six games. Marshall has not allowed a goal in the 236:46 of game action. The last tally against the Herd came at the 53:16 mark of the Oct. 21 UAB match.
Stanton Smith (Cape Town, South Africa/University of Charleston) is third in Conference USA in shots (47) and seventh in goals (6). Terhune is fourth in shutouts (3) and fifth in saves (65), while Karim Boukhemis (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) is fifth in shots (42). Osric Flores (Everett, Wash./Cascade) is tied for fourth in game-winning goals with two.
In conference games only, Terhune is tied for first in shutouts (3), while Smith (34) and Boukhemis (27) are first and fourth, respectively, in shots.
Radford (8-6, 5-2 Big South) has suffered back-to-back conference losses after opening the league slate with five straight wins. The Highlanders lost, 2-1, Sunday at Winthrop to stretch their overall losing skid to four matches. Radford was ranked ninth in the NSCAA/adidas South Atlantic Regional rankings on Oct. 19 but has since fallen out of the poll. In goal, Omar Zinoveev leads the Highlanders with an 8-4 record and a 1.16 goals against average. Ramon Negron has a team-best six goals and shares the team lead in points with Patrick Colas with 12.
Radford and Marshall met last season in the regular season finale in Huntington, with the Herd taking a 2-1 decision. Jeremy Ashe (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) had the game-winning goal and also assisted on a Nicholas Ademolu (Windsor, Ontario/Cleveland State) goal. Radford leads the all-time series, 4-1-2.
Marshall will have a week off after the Radford contest before it begins Conference USA tournament play Nov. 9 in Dallas. SMU will play host to the event.
