Marshall Edges Evansville, 70-67, In Home Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Mark Patton scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Marshall to a 70-67 win over Evansville on Saturday.
Patton grabbed two offensive rebounds in the final minute and scored off the second to put Marshall up by three with 17 seconds left.
With time running out, Chris Ross picked off the Purple Aces' pass and threw the ball down court in celebration of Marshall's first victory of the season.
Travis Aikens had 15 points and Joe Miles added 14 for the Thundering Herd (1-2).
Kyle Anslinger led Evansville (1-2) in scoring with 16 points while Eric Ottens contributed 11 in the loss.
Evansville took a 67-66 lead on Matt Webster's layup with 2:50 left, but the Purple Aces would not hit another field goal, missing their last five shots.
After Aikens scored six points during an 11-2 run to propel Marshall to its biggest lead, Anslinger answered with eight straight points to tie the game at 55 with 9:23 left.
Chris Ross hit a reverse layup to give Marshall a 40-39 lead with 16:37 left and the Herd's first lead since the early stages of the game when it had a 13-11 advantage.
