JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Marshall University baseball team will be looking to get its first win of the season this weekend, traveling to Jacksonville State to take on the Gamecocks.
Game one is set to begin on Friday at 3 p.m. with Saturday's game starting at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
Despite falling in the three games last weekend at Southern Mississippi, the Herd did show signs of improvement from the first weekend. The offense improved greatly, notching 32 hits for the weekend as opposed to 15 in the three-game set at Mercer.
Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) continued his strong start, going 6-11 last weekend, bumping his season batting average to .412. Freshman Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) leads the team with a .476 average. He was 4-6 against the Golden Eagles, with a double.
Others who came on in the USM series included: senior Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), who had a home run and an RBI in his first weekend of play, junior transfer Bubba Pfaff (Florence, CO), who batted .375 for the weekend and scored three runs, and catcher Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.), who recorded four hits, two of the doubles, to cap off a solid weekend.
The Gamecocks are 1-2 after facing Southeast Louisiana last weekend. After falling in the first two games of the series, JSU took the third game by a 5-3 score on Sunday. Their offense struggled a bit in their opening series, batting .181. Their pitching staff has been solid, tallying a 4.91 ERA for the weekend.
Jacksonville State, the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference champions, went 31-29 in 2004, including 17-13 at home. They went 3-1 in the OVC tournament and advanced to the NCAA East Regionals, before falling out with an 0-2 record.
After the Jacksonville State trip, the Herd will have games on Tuesday and Wednesday at West Virginia State and VMI, respectively, before heading home for the opener on Saturday March 5 again Canisius.
