LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty third baseman Chad Miller scored on a wild pitch in the tenth inning to give the Liberty Flames a 4-3 win over the Marshall University baseball team at Worthington Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Miller led the inning off with a walk for Liberty (11-3) and stole second and advanced to third on a risky play, running on a fly ball to center. With two outs, MU pitcher Brian Knippelmeyer (Lincoln, NE) threw a wild pitch, which allowed Miller to score the winning run.
Marshall (2-9) fought to get the game to extra innings, scoring the tying run in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) singled to left. After Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR) was hit by a pitch, Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) singled to center to score Ptacek.
In the top of the tenth, the Thundering Herd had its chance to take the lead. Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) led the inning off with a single, but was out at second when Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) hit into a fielder's choice. Johnson advanced to second on a wild pitch. At the plate was Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA), who singled to right field. Johnson was waved around third, but was thrown out at the plate.
After Frederick, Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA) was at the plate, and singled to center for hit first hit with the Herd. That moved Frederick to third. With two on base, MU tried to pull off a double steal, but Frederick was thrown out at the plate to end that scoring opportunity.
The Flames came out of the box early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. David Bechtold led the inning off with a single and with two outs, scored on an error by Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), who misplayed a fly ball in right.
Marshall took what would be its only lead of the game in the top of the third. With two outs, Ptacek reached on an error and Mason recorded an infield single. Aaron Jamieson followed those up with an RBI single to right. Joe Glevenyak followed Jamieson with another RBI single, this one to left field.
Liberty came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. With one out and the bases loaded, David Bechtold struck again, hitting a sacrifice fly to left to score the run. In the bottom of the sixth, they took a 3-2 lead. Patrick Galliard walked with one out and scored on an error by Brad Helm (Downingtown, PA). Adam Kearney hit a double to left field, which was misplayed by Helm.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the ninth when the Herd made its two out rally, led by Jamieson's RBI single. MU was unable to capitalize on three hits in the tenth, and in the bottom of the inning, Liberty scored on a wild pitch to take the win.
Knippelmeyer took the loss for MU, dropping to 1-3 on the season. Stephen Williams took the win for Liberty, pitching the tenth for the Flames.
Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) started the game for Marshall, going 5 1/3, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on four hits. Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) pitched a scoreless 2 2/3 innings while Bryson Meyers (Oakland, MD) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Herd out-hit the Flames, 12-7. Frederick, Glevenyak and Jamieson each recorded two hits in the game while six players had one. Jamieson led the team with two runs batted in. Adam Ptacek, who scored three runs on Saturday, added on two more runs in today's game.
On Monday, the Herd will look to take game three of the series. David Slovak (Louisville, KY) will be on the mound for the Herd, looking for his first career win. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m..
