DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Andrew Hancock (Ashland, KY), in his first collegiate start, pitched six innings, allowing three runs to help the Thundering Herd baseball team to an 8-3 win over the Duke Blue Devils Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.
Hancock earned his first win, improving his record to 1-1. Of the three runs given up, only one was earned.
Marshall (5-12) has now won three of its last four games while the Blue Devils, who lost two of three to Wright State over the weekend, drop to 8-17.
The Herd jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With one out, Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) doubled to left-center. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) followed that up with another double to score Johnson. With two outs, Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) singled to bring in Frederick for the second run of the inning.
Duke grabbed one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Kyle Kreick singled to center to knock in a run. Marshall got the run right back in the top of the third when Tommy Johnson singled to score Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.), who doubled earlier in the inning.
MU kept the offense rolling in the fourth, scoring three more times to take a 6-1 lead. Wolle led the inning off with a walk. After Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) reached on an error, Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA) walked to load the bases. With one out, Aaron Jamieson walked to bring in the first run and the next batter, Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) was issued the third walk of the inning to score the second run. The third run of the inning scored on a passed ball.
In the seventh, Marshall added on two more runs to put the game out of reach for Duke. Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR) recorded an RBI double in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Blue Devils scored one run in both the fourth and sixth innings, but were unable to make a run late in the game, falling 8-3.
After Hancock's six-inning performance, Bryson Meyers (Oakland, MD) pitched two scoreless innings and Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) pitched a scoreless ninth. Combined, the Herd's three pitchers gave up only six hits while striking out seven. Duke starting pitcher Ryan Sember pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, took the loss, his second of the season.
The Herd doubled Duke in hits, 12-6. Ptacek, Wolle, Frederick and Johnson each recorded two hits. Frederick also scored two runs.
On Wednesday, the teams will square off in the second and final game of the series. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
