RICHMOND, Ky. ? Eastern Kentucky scored eight runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating the Thundering Herd baseball team, 11-10, Wednesday afternoon.

The Herd (7-14, 2-1 MAC) came to within a run of the Colonels (8-10, 2-1 OVC) in the eighth, but was unable to capitalize to take the win.

EKU scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second off of Herd starter Andrew Hancock (Ashland, KY). Adam Visnic notched an RBI single in the first, and scored when Will Whisenant homered to right. In the second, five runs crossed the plate as EKU recorded three hits, two walks and one batter reached on an error.

An RBI single in the second by Bubba Pfaff (Florence, CO) put Marshall on the board in the second. In the third, MU got one run closer, making it an 8-2 game. Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) doubled to lead off and moved to third on a single by Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR). Johnson would score when Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) grounded into a double play.

The fourth inning saw the Herd make it an 8-6 game. Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) and Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second and third when Bubba Pfaff grounded out. Next was Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA) who grounded out to second to bring in Glevenyak. An RBI single by Tommy Johnson brought in the second run of the inning. After Mason singled for the second time in the game and Ptacek walked, Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) singled to right to bring in two runs.

The Colonels scored one run in the fourth through sixth innings, while Marshall scored once in the top of the sixth on another RBI single by Johnson to make it 11-7 after six innings.

Down 11-7 entering the top half of the eighth, the Herd made its run. After Bubba Pfaff was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Aaron Levinson hit a home run to left field, his first at MU, to make it an 11-9 game. Johnson kept his perfect day going with his fourth hit of the day. After Brent Mason popped out to first for MU?s first out of the inning, Adam Ptacek doubled to deep center field to score Johnson. Adam Frederick, who batted next, reached on an error to put runners on first and second with one out, but EKU brought in their closer, Richard Boothe, who got the final two outs of the inning.

EKU threatened again in the ninth, putting their first two batters on, but MU, with help from pitchers Bryson Meyers (Oakland, MD) and Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS), got out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the ninth, the Herd tried to use some two-out magic, with Levinson notching his third hit of the day and Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) being hit by a pitch, but MU was unable to get the runners home and fell to the Colonels 11-10.

Andrew Hancock took the loss for MU dropping to 1-2 on the season. He went 4 2/3 innings giving up ten runs on ten hits. Taking the win for EKU was Eric Anthrop. It was his first of the season.
