Herd Volleyball to Host MU/WVIAC Spring Challenge
3/31/2005
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Thundering Herd volleyball squad heads back to the courts this weekend when it hosts a spring tournament against five opponents from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The action begins Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Cam Henderson Center along with Gullickson Hall and runs throughout the afternoon as Marshall plays host to the University of Charleston, Fairmont State, Ohio Valley, West Virginia Wesleyan and West Virginia State.
"It's exciting to have so many West Virginia schools participating in a single event," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "I'm sure they will all be a little pumped up to get a shot at Marshall. I'm looking for this day to be fun for all and a great chance to get to know a little more about the solid Division II programs in our state. All in all it should be a great day of competition."
Marshall first plays at 10 a.m. against the University of Charleston and then plays West Virginia Wesleyan at 11 a.m. After a lunch break, the Herd returns for matinee action against West Virginia State and the University of Charleston at 2 and 3 p.m., respectively. All of Marshall?s matches are scheduled to be played in the Cam Henderson Center.
Each match in the event will be played in a best of three format with the third game, if necessary, going to 15.
Marshall is coming off another successful campaign under Jacobs as it went on to its third consecutive 20-plus win season and appeared in the Mid-American Conference finals for the second straight year.
The Marshall/WVIAC Spring Challenge will give Herd fans an early glimpse at the 2005 squad. Next season the Herd returns all of its scholarship players from 2004 and with leadership and All-American honoree Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) in the mix, the Herd looks to contend for a Conference USA title as it heads into the new league.
