Virginia Tech Up Next For Baseball

4/21/2005

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Marshall baseball will take a weekend off from Mid-American Conference play, traveling to Virginia Tech for a series against the Hokies.

The first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday are set for 7 p.m. starts while Sunday will have the usual 1 p.m. first pitch.

This will mark the final non-conference series for the Thundering Herd as it will finish up the season with four conference series. Marshall will head to Blacksburg with a 12-20 record thus far and is coming off of a 2-2 week, which includes Wednesday's 5-4 extra inning win over Eastern Kentucky.

Senior outfielder Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) has been swinging the hot bat as of late for the Herd. He has registered a hit in nine of his last 16 at-bats and has three runs and four RBI's over the last four games. He also has a team-leading seven home runs and 23 RBI's on the season.

Second baseman Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) has also produced offensively. He leads the team in hits with 44, but the more impressive stats is that he has hit safely in 28 of Marshall's 32 games in 2005.

On the mound, junior Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) has won two straight. In a home win over Kent State, Cummings went five innings giving up three runs on four hits for his first win of the season. Though he was shaky in his start at Ohio University, he notched his second win of the year with a five inning performance where he allowed six earned runs.

Virginia Tech has had a tough season in the first trip through the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are 14-17 overall and 2-12 in the ACC, but are 3-3 in their last six games. Most recently, they defeated Radford by a 7-1 score on Wednesday. In their most recent conference series, they were swept at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes, who were ranked #14 in the nation at the time and have since moved up to eighth in the Collegiate Baseball rankings.

The Hokies own a 20-8 advantage in the overall series, but the Herd has been victorious in two of the last three meetings. The teams split their last series in 1999 with Marshall opening with a 5-3 win before VT took a 13-1 win in game two.

Herdzone will have updates after all three games throughout the weekend.

Next week, Marshall will play four road games, including a very important series at conference rival Central Michigan. The Herd will travel to Lexington, Ky. to face the Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to take on the Chippewas over the weekend.
