Johnson Named MAC East Player Of The Week
4/25/2005
CLEVELAND - Freshman Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week by the league office on Monday.
Johnson went 4-8 (.500) for the week and helped the Thundering Herd to a 2-1 record over that span.
In last Wednesday's 5-4 win over Eastern Kentucky, Johnson scored twice and was 1-2 at the plate. He followed that up with a 1-3 performance in Friday's game at Virginia Tech. He also brought in two runs with a single in that game to give the Herd a temporary lead.
His top performance came in MU's 12-4 win over the Hokies on Saturday night. He opened the game up with a sacrifice fly to put Marshall on the board in the first inning. He came to the plate with the bases loaded in the second inning and drove the first pitch out of the park for his first career grand slam. It also marked the first home run of his career. He finished the game with two hits and five runs batted in.
For the week, the freshman had a team-leading seven RBI's. He was issued three walks and had a .636 on-base percentage for the week.
Johnson and the rest of the team will look to keep the momentum from Saturday's 12-4 win at Virginia Tech going as they travel to Kentucky for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday night. From there, MU will travel to Central Michigan for three games this weekend.
