Chippewas Up Next For Baseball

4/28/2005

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - After a week off from Mid-American Conference play, the Thundering Herd baseball team will travel to Central Michigan for a three-game set against the defending regular season MAC champion Chippewas.

On Friday, the series will start with a 3 p.m. game while the final two games on Saturday and Sunday are set for 1 p.m. start times.

Marshall (13-22, 6-6 MAC) has fallen in two of its last three games, including a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday night. Last weekend, the Herd earned a series split with Virginia Tech. After falling in the first game by a 5-4 score, MU took the second game on Saturday by a 12-4 score.

Freshman Tommy Johnson (Gaithersburg, MD) recorded his first career home run, which was a grand slam, in Saturday's win. He also accounted for seven RBI's over the last three games. Johnson earned MAC East Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

Leading the offense as of late has been senior Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL). Glevenyak has raised his average to .342, good for second on the team. He has recorded hits in five of his last nine at-bats and has scored three runs and knocked in two more over that span.

The Chippewas (24-15, 6-6 MAC) are coming off of a 3-1 week, which saw them sweep a weekend series from conference rival Northern Illinois. Entering last weekend 3-6 in the MAC, CMU evened its record with the sweep. This weekend's series could be pivotal in deciding which of the two teams will make a run at the conference tournament. Last season, Central Michigan led the regular season with an 18-6 record.

Central owns an 8-1 advantage in the all-time series. Last year, the Chippewas swept the Herd in three games in Huntington.

Herdzone will have updates after each game over the weekend.
