MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - CMU freshman starting pitcher Josh Collmenter threw a complete game giving up just five hits and one run as the Chippewas defeated the Marshall baseball team by an 8-1 margin on Saturday afternoon.
Collmenter struck out 11 batters while walking just one in the outing. The offense gave Collmenter enough run support, led by Noah Lankford's three RBI's.
The loss drops the Herd to a 13-24 record and 6-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas improve to 26-15 and 8-6 in the MAC.
In a game which started off as a pitcher's duel, the Chippewas opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, CMU left fielder Jim Geldhof was walked and was followed by Kurtis Wells, who went 5-6 with four RBI's in Friday's game. Wells started off strong again, hitting a double to center field to put the Chippewas up 1-0.
Marshall came back to tie the game in the top of the third. Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR) hit a bunt single with one out and later advanced to third on a single by Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH). A sacrifice fly by Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) brought in Mason to tie the game.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. MU starter Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) cruised through the first five innings, giving up just one run on two hits. After the leadoff runner reached base in the sixth, Cummings was taken out in favor of freshman David Slovak (Louisville, KY). The move did not pay off as Slovak allowed a walk and a hit batter to load up the bases for CMU designated hitter Noah Lankford. Lankford responded immediately, belting a single through the left side to bring in two runs. Later, a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ryan Peel brought in the third run of the inning.
Central Michigan put the finishing touches on the game, adding a run in the seventh before scoring three in the eighth to down the Herd, 8-1.
The Marshall offense was held to just five hits by the CMU freshman. Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA) had the only multi-hit game for MU, going 2-3. Brent Mason scored the Herd's only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Adam Ptacek.
Chris Cummings had a solid outing. He pitched five innings allowing two runs on two hits. He took the loss and dropped to 3-2. In 2/3 of an inning, David Slovak gave up two runs on a hit and a walk. Junior Bryson Meyers (Oakland, MD) gave up a run in the seventh inning while Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) pitched a scoreless 1/3 of an inning. Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ont.) tossed the eighth inning and gave up three runs on three hits.
On Sunday, MU will look to avoid the sweep when they take on CMU in a 1 p.m. game.
