- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? A complete game shutout by Ball State pitcher Ben Snyder pushed the Cardinals to a 9-0 win over the Marshall University baseball team in game two of their series on Saturday afternoon. Snyder went the distance, giving up just five hits while fanning seven Marshall batters.
This marked the second dominant win for Ball State (33-13, 17-4 MAC) of the weekend, as the Cardinals took down the Thundering Herd (15-31, 7-13 MAC) by a 17-4 score on Friday.
The Cardinal offense was strong out of the gate, putting up a run in the first inning on an RBI single by second baseman Kyle Dygert. Single runs would also score for BSU in the third and fifth innings. The third saw a run score on a groundout by first baseman Brad Miller while their run in the fifth came thanks to strong base-running by leadoff hitter Mike Sullivan, who reached via a walk. After stealing second and third, Sullivan would score on a passed ball to make it a 3-0 BSU lead.
Ball State continued to roll in the sixth, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded single to center by Sullivan. Eric Earnhart?s single in the seventh extended the Cardinals lead to 6-0 and in the ninth, the scoring was completed by a three-run home run by the BSU third baseman C.J. Webb.
Starting pitcher Ben Snyder did the rest of the work, giving up just five hits and walking one in the game. Marshall did have some scoring chances, but was unable to get the clutch hitting it needed to bring in runs. The Herd?s first scoring chance came in the third inning with two outs as Marshall Murray (Walnut Creek, CA) was hit by a pitch and was followed by an Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) single, but a groundout to first by Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) ended that inning.
That was the top opportunity on the day, as it was the only inning where the Herd had two batters on base at the same time. There were two other chances where the leadoff hitter singled to reach, but quickly got off base on double play groundouts.
Recording the five hits for Marshall were Ptacek, Frederick, Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.), Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR) and Brad Helm (Downingtown, PA).
On the other side of the ball for Marshall, Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) started the game, going 5 2/3 innings. He allowed only three hits, but was hurt by eight walks. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned. He took the loss, dropping to 3-3. Brian Knippelmeyer (Lincoln, NE) finished the game off, going the final 3 1/3 allowing four runs on five hits.
After scoring 17 runs on Friday, Ball State was held to nine in Saturday?s contest. C.J. Webb had the top day for the Cardinals, going 2-5 with three runs batted in and runs scored. Kyle Dygert had the other multi-hit game for BSU, going 2-4, scoring twice.
Marshall will look to avoid the sweep, facing Ball State in the finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday. It will mark the final home game of the season for Marshall, along with Senior Day. The five seniors on the team, Brad Helm, Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ont.), Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) and Marshall Murray will be honored before the game.
Dr. Jose Ricard, the team doctor, will be honored for all of the work he has done in over 20 years at the university by throwing out the first pitch. Admission to University Heights is free and the game can also be heard on 930 AM WRVC with Steve Cotton and Woody Woodrum.
