Baseball Ties Series With 2-1 Win
5/7/2005
- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? Sophomore catcher Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) knocked in both of the Thundering Herd?s runs as Marshall downed the Akron Zips by a 2-1 score on Saturday afternoon.
Wolle went 3-4 on the day with all three hits being line drive singles to center field. Two of Wolle's singles scored first baseman Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH), who had a pair of hits in the game.
Unlike Friday?s 23-hit affair, Saturday?s game was more of a pitcher?s duel, with the teams combining for three runs on 13 hits. Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) started the game for the Herd and pitched 5 2/3 solid innings before exiting the game after being hit by a line drive. He allowed one run on two hits and would walk off the field after being hit. Junior Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) went the final 3 1/3, holding the Zips scoreless to take his third win of the season.
Marshall (14-27, 7-10 MAC) got things started in the second inning. Brent Mason (Sherwood, AR) led off with a double into left field to bring up Stieger, who was given the Herd?s second walk of the game. A failed bunt attempt by Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) got Mason out at third, but Nick Wolle picked him up, belting a single to center to score Stieger.
The Zips (19-23, 7-5 MAC) tied the game in the fifth inning when outfielder Andy Capraruolo hit a double to the gap in left field to score catcher Jim Bonnette, who walked to begin the inning.
Just an inning later, Marshall would take the lead for good. Akron starter Tom Farmer allowed a one-out single to Roddy Stieger. With McConnell at the plate, Stieger stole second and was brought home by Nick Wolle?s second hit of the day to make it a 2-1 game.
From there, Brendon Bump held the Akron hitters in check, downing six of the last seven batters to finish off MU?s 14th win of the season and put a halt to the team?s six-game losing streak.
After a 21-hit performance by the Zip offense on Friday, they were held to only four hits in Saturday?s game as Cummings and Bump each allowed just two hits. The Herd offense was able to muster nine hits against Akron?s staff, comprised of Tom Farmer and Pat Gliha. Nick Wolle led the way with three hits while Stieger had two hits and scored twice. Senior Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) also registered two hits. Four different Akron hitters recorded one hit apiece.
Brendon Bump was credited with the win, improving to 3-2. Farmer took the loss for Akron, his first of the year, dropping to 3-1.
On Sunday, the Herd will look to clinch the season series against Akron for the second year in a row. Last season, MU took both games of a Saturday doubleheader in Akron before the Zips came back win a win in the Sunday game. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m. at University Heights.
