Herd Volleyball Caribbean Tour Diary Day Eight
Team Visits Jalicia Ross' Family in Trinidad
6/9/2005
Each day while the Marshall Volleyball team is in Barbados and Trinidad, a selected member or members of the team will write a journal entry to keep Herd fans updated on the team's travels and encounters while playing international competition and touring the sights of the Caribbean.
Day 8-Trinidad, West Indies
Written by- Jalicia Ross and Uche Ndubisi
Today was entertaining. Since we didn?t have a match, we had the opportunity to go to Port-of- Spain, Trinidad?s capitol and major shopping city. While in Port-of-Spain, We went to the bank to get extra money and Nickie made sure had her KFC before we did any shopping. With only about an hour to shop around, we scampered store to store buying last minute gifts for our friends and family.
We came back and within 15 minutes we were on our way to Maracas Beach, one of Trinidad?s beautiful beaches. The ride there took FOREVER. We had to go up a mountain to reach the beach and we saw some of the most gorgeous scenery we had ever seen in our lives. From the top, you could see surrounding mountains covered with trees and scatted houses. When we were getting closer to the beach, on the hill, we could see the Caribbean Sea partly encircled by mountains.
Once there, it took us no time to get our towels out and into the water to ride the waves. The water was warm and inviting, even Nickie went in the water (which hasn?t happened a lot on the trip). The Trinidadian specialty, bake and shark, was quite tasty for those of us who experienced it for the first time. Along the shoreline, we found some interesting shells and rocks to take back with us. Although we didn?t want to leave Maracas, it was 5 o?clock and we had to take a shower and get ready to have dinner at Jalicia?s house.
Jalicia?s family prepared curry for the team. Curry is an Indian dish with roti, channa and potato, mango anchar, and curried chicken. We would have been there around 7:30 but, our bus driver decided not to show up on time so we had to get a new bus driver and we made it there around 9:00. We had the opportunity to meet Jalicia?s family and friends who were all very hospitable towards us. We ?limed? there for awhile and we were on our way back to the hotel to get dressed for the Zen.
Zen is Trinidad?s top night club that plays music from Usher and Ludacris to Beenie Man and Machael Montano (a soca artist). When we first arrived, a soca band was performing on stage and the lead singer was hot and ?wining? all over. His performance was very energetic and was able to hold the crowd throughout his show. When their show was over, it was back to the DJ playing the music. We danced all night long with Kelly and Jalicia?s friends. All in all?.this was the best day of our trip!
