Marshall displayed another dominating performance in the Courtyard by Marriott Fort Meade Invitational with a 3-0 (31-29, 30-23, 30-23) win over Rutgers to improve to 2-2 on the season.
"We played really well today," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We were able to keep Rutgers off balance for most of the night and really gained control of the match."
The Thundering Herd, that earlier in the day downed UT-Arlington 3-0 trailed early in game one, but the Herd pulled it together and rallied to take the opener of the match 31-29.
Marshall would continue to roll in games two and three to finish off the Scarlet Knights and get its record to .500 for the first time in the young season.
Kelly-Anne Billingy led all players with 20 kills in the match and a .516 hitting percentage. Amber Sims and Christin Bimberg added 12 and 11 kills respectively to lead the Herd. Katie Stein put up an impressive 52 assists in the three games.
"Christin was outstanding tonight and Katie set her best match of the year," Jacobs said.
Billingy and Stephanie Cahill were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances throughout the weekend and host Maryland took home the tournament crown.
The Herd will be in action again next Friday night in the Friends of Coal Blue/Green Classic at the Charleston Civic Center against another Big East opponent in in-state rival West Virginia University. Also in the tournament will be Coppin State and Morehead State.
"We gave a good effort all day today," Jacobs said. "We've now got to regroup and get ready for WVU. We're getting things turned around and we need to continue to improve defensively, that's the key."
