HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall senior midfielder/defender Jeremy Ashe (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) was selected with the 46th pick Friday by the Chicago Fire in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Ashe is the third MLS draft pick in school history, joining Taly Goode (2001) and Byron Carmichael (2003).
"It's such an exciting experience," Ashe said. "It all has happened so fast, but I really feel blessed. I am honored to be able to continue playing."
As one of the top leaders for the Herd last season, Ashe scored two goals and added three assists for seven points while starting all 19 matches. He also was named to the 2005 Conference USA All-Tournament team. He scored the game-winning goal in the season opener Sept. 1 vs. Temple and also tallied a goal and two assists Sept. 8 vs. Pittsburgh.
"This is outstanding for our program," Marshall head coach Bob Gray said. "It shows the recognition we are starting to get and if you look at all the Conference USA players picked, it also bodes well for the conference.
"They couldn't have drafted a nicer player. He is the epitome of the student-athlete. He came to Marshall as a Yeager Scholar, and he's a kid who has proven that hard work gets you places. He is one of the hardest workers in the weight room and also has a lot of versatility, as he showed when he played outside midfielder and then finished in the back on defense this year. He was one of the big reasons we had such a strong run at the end of the season."
Ashe was a vital cog on defense in helping Marshall to 6-2-1 record over its final nine matches of the 2005 season. The Herd defense came alive during that stretch, holding opponents scoreless for 479:17 at one point.
"(The Fire) was looking for an outside defender who would be a good man marker, and with Jeremy's athleticism, I think he will be a good fit," Gray said.
In all, five student-athletes were selected from Conference USA schools, led by UAB's Leandro de Oliveira at No. 11 with the New England Revolution. The MLS SuperDraft features four rounds and 48 total picks.
